Question
I need help in running my website design startup?
I started my web design start up, it's been about 3.5 months. I have a full time job and only design about 3-4 hrs at night. On the weekends I can work 5-6 hrs. I bid projects on 1 freelance website. My first project was to update a website. It was a very easy project. I worked about 3 hrs and got paid $450. My second project was to redesign a charity website. It was a small project for $350. However, my proposal templates were above average, I was getting one client a week since. It's too many for a one man show. The third, fourth, fifth and so on were big projects. $1600+, $775, $1200, etc...I guess it's my fault. All I was thinking was how to make the most money. It sounds stupid, it's really hard for me to finish big projects in one week. Also the skill factor comes in play. Maybe my strength is copywriting. But I have passion for website design. I've tried to outsource the work but it left me with very little profit or I had to sacrifice profit and took a loss.

You need to outsource the work to a company that is located in a developing country such as the Philippines, India or even Thailand. In these countries your money goes much further than in the states. There is no shortage of talented web designers. When you outsource work, it will take time to find a quality company to do the work for you. Good luck.

I say cut down the projects you accept. Do what you can handle alone. or like you said it leave you with little profit.

Decide how you see your business in the next 3-5 years. If you choose to expand the business, then find the right team to help you grow. If you want to keep it small, then charge lots and see a small number of people. I personally have 5 clients, but they provide me with over $575,000 annual income and I also do some consulting on the side at $10,000 a day because that's the lifestyle I choose to live and I choose to spend time with family too...

Charge by the hour instead of by the project and make sure your clients know that you are limited on your hours to work. Don't be afraid to refuse business that you cannot handle and concentrate on what you can do. The more experience you have the faster you'll be so that you can work your way up to handling the bigger accounts. As your business grows you will either have to hire help or turn the business to your full time endeavor and that's not such a bad thing. I'm sure others only wish they were in your shoes.
