Question

How can I promote a used building supply store?

This store was set up to divert useful products from landfill sites. While we focus primarily on building supplies, we also handle other related products such as tools and machines. We are looking for opportunities to promote the store’s products in the local community. We’re already considering an e-mail newsletter, strategic partnerships with places like hardware stores (we often have no-longer-available items), telemarketing, brochures, media interviews, and community events. We’ve had quite good success with online advertising through e-Bay, Kijiji and CraigsList and would welcome suggestions of other inexpensive online marketing initiatives. We know that our primary target market is a male do-it-yourselfer, aged 30-50 who lives within 30 km of the store. The main question is how best to reach that specific target market. Any suggestions ideas would be appreciated.

Good question. It shows a well thought out business model. I assume the logic of your target market is ability to see and pick-up the product. If you were able to overcome these barriers your available market swells exponentially. Perhaps web-based "e-store" with search-able index, detailed specifications, and several photos of each item. This is not that costly to set up. Once an item is shipped the computer should automatically remove it from the index. Shipping would be at the cost of consumer. A liberal return policy would take the risk out of buying. Be sure to get linked to and from environmental sites. Network with these groups and they will do large parts of your marketing for you. This could really take off! Best Wishes Craig
