I like Zen Cart. Setting up a shopping cart is a major pain. Zen Cart is organized to make that easier, and to make maintenance easier. OSC-Max is similar, not as easy to use, but it has some features Zen Cart is missing. Most people won't need those features, but are you one of them? These are both freeware packages, built around the venerable OSCommerce base. There's also Cube Cart, which is fairly good. If none of those packages meets your needs, you *really* need to write your own software. The other freeware packages are too buggy to use, or seriously deficient in features. The problem with using closed-source software is that you never know when they are going to "upgrade" to a version that doesn't do what you need done, and when they do, your store is closed for however many weeks or months it takes for you to build a new store, using other software. If they do that with open source software, it's relatively easy to go in and make the changes you need, which means relatively cheap, relatively fast.
