Question

Why can't I network efficiently to my benefit?

I am a 24-year-old college graduate working at a prestigous University in a high-paced department. I have always had a flare for 'partying, mingling, meeting people' but when it comes to actually following-through and using those persons as resources, contacts---I fall FLAT. I don't know what it is? I'm very attractive and most business(men) are ALWAYS coming on to me sexually and most business(women) are too intimated to associate with me. I am starting to become discouraged in my business endeavors, because I see other women partnerships and men partnerships flurishing--while I'm struggling to get taken seriously. I'm focusing in on my people skills, business plan and communication tactics---but keep meeting dead-ends. On top of this--I have no close friends here in the city I live--so it's hard to build alliances with strangers...What am I doing wrong? What should my approach be? Is this a sign that, it's not meant for me to be a business entrapuneur? I'm tired of spinning my wheels My GOALS are to establish a design/marketing/promotional consulting type business. I live in ATL---so it's VERY COMPETITIVE down here and all about WHO you know!!!

My advice would be to just throw yourself into some social settings where you can meet people. Remember that you are ALWAYS being watched, and make sure that your behavior is appropriate for business. Make people know that you are smart and a good worker with good work ethics. If people think of you as a "partier" then they may not see you as someone to go to for consultation work. If who you know is the answer, then you just have to get in there and meet the right people, and give the right impression. Good luck!
