IRS Advice on Business Use of Your Home
Besides "Real Property" and vehicles, can IRS take away private belongings? From inside your home?

so, i have an existing corporation that i use for building homes. i want to expand a portion of this corporation to deal w/more of a service-oriented area of the home business (i don't really want to give away my idea, but it's a service that has to do w/homes). Here's where I need advice. I want the "title" of this subportion of the company to be called something else. Is this legal? Or can I say "___(place service business name here)____ , a division of _____(corporation's name here)______" will the irs wail on me, or is this okay to do???

Companies have divisions with different names all of the time. You don't even have to set them up as a legal entity. You would have to copywrite the name to keep others from copying it.

Sure. Lots of companies do business under a different name. In your case, it would be "Corporate name d/b/a Service co. name". If you're really worried, then you can just form a second corporation and have it obtain its own IRS tax ID.

Heres what I do. Your corporation files paperwork to start an LLC. That LLC is owned by your corporation thus giving you two companies that are both protected under law and keeps you out of it and thus gives you another write off as the LLC is its own entity it has its own ein number. Now on my company I do as follows: The Web OnRamp Networks LLC dba Go SuperNet Internet Services and Go SuperNet Internet Services part of The Web OnRamp Networks LLC group of companies. Umbrellas the whole mess. In your case if you file the LLC it would be: XYZ Home services LLC a xyz home builder inc., company
