Boston Red Sox
Question
How do I get a business started that has to do with logos, etc.?
I have what I think is an excellent idea for a business. Of course I have to be a little vague, but it has to do with putting logos on things. I have already looked into the licensing portions and legalities of it, etc., and am OK there as far as knowledge of it goes. What I don't know is how to market it. For example, hypothetically, let's say I invented the coffee cup. How do I get it made if I knew nothing about ceramics? Who would I ask? Then, let's say I wanted to put the Boston Red Sox's logo on it. Barring all the paperwork and such, how would I go about finding out how to have the little logos printed on all the cups? On a side note, THERE'S a good business idea, for anyone who knows how to do this kind of thing - you could help people open their own businesses! Seems like a silly question but hey, think about the guy who invented Hot Wheels and what he probably had to go thru ...

You've got multiple questions inter-mingled there. I'll try to break them out. 1) In terms of production, every item is unique. The capabilities required to produce mugs are different from those required to produce t-shirts. So, the question of how to produce what you have invented depends entirely on what you invented. 2) How to get a logo on to something? Again, this depends on the object itself. There are lots of technologies out there: Silk screen, embroidery, dye sublimation, self-adhesive stickers, etc, etc, etc. The one you choose will largely be a function of the nature of what you are attaching the logo to: Eg, you aren't going to embroider onto a mug. 3) In order to use existing copyrighted logos, you are going to need permission. You can't just put the Boston Red Sox logo on something and then sell it. You need permission (a licensing agreement) in advance. Getting that is going to be tough for a small operation: The big boys aren't going to be interested in working with you. The best you can do is to make contact with them and see where they can direct you. They may have resellers with blanket licensing agreements that you could partner with.
