Question

Housing Allowance for the Philippines???

Hello, I am Michael, and I recently got married to a Filippina from Ozamis. I am going to bring her to the US but need to put her in an appartment. I am Army and as you know I have a few more hurdles than the civilian counter part..hehe. I would like to know if they have a Housing allowance for the philippines so I can keep her in an appartment till we get past the processing time for the visas. Is it different for certain areas like here in the states? I would appreciate all and any help on this. thank you, Michael michaelscote@yahoo.com michaelscote yahoo id

NO -- there is no such thing as housing allowance in the Philippines. The country has no welfare system such as in the US where the "poor" gets food stamps, Medicare, subsidized housing. In the Philippines, the poor lives in shanties, in squatter areas, under the bridge. In Manila, there is a huge squatter problem where people build 1 room shanties where the whole family lives. In the provinces such as Ozamis, the poor lives in nipa huts. The poor hardly eats 3 times a day -- and they don't have microwave, cars, and other normal stuff that the poor in America have. There's so many poor people that giving "housing allowance" would bankrupt the whole government because a huge part of the population lives below the poverty line. Simply find her an apartment that you can afford. But never even think that there is government support for your fiance in the Philippines. And this situation is the same whether she is in Manila or in Ozamis

There's no such thing as housing allowance. In the meantime, send her US$100, that's about P4500. That's what most people make in a month (some, even less) and should be enough to last her a month. Cost of living in the province is much less compared to living in the city. Don't get suckered into sending her too much money. You'll end up supporting her WHOLE family (her brothers' wife neice ... etc)
