Question
I'm writing a paper about tv ads and how everyone is too sensitive, any suggestions?
I believe that this country is way to sensitive and have lost their sense of humor. My thesis statement is: Everyone is entitled to their opinion on advertising, but if we can't laugh at ourselves, at whom can we laugh? I'm looking for ways to research this, looking for opposing views on commercials.

Click on this link to see commercials that were recently banned. I thought the snickers ad with the two guys kissing was hilarious. www ... I remember the uproar when the "first Trojan condom ad" was aired in the 1990's. What was so funny was that the first condom ad had already aired in 1975 in California. Now we see Viagra ads daily. So I hope people are becoming less uptight, not more. Although, I was offended by the Bob Dole erectile disfunction ad. Not the subject matter, just the fact that Bob Dole is still having sex. I think it is sad when people who object to an ad feel that no one else has the right to see it. I have been a vegetarian my whole life and I don't run screaming every time a McDonald's commercial comes on. Hope this helps, Dharma

What commercials do you mean? And are you trying to say that it is okay to be insulting, demeaning, or innapropriate? I am sure it is okay to be all of the above on your own time, but not generally in a public forum. Of course, it is all about exploiting your target market, and if they are bigots or creeps, then they might enjoy a crass commercial.

Funny I read your questions. Today the movie "Old School" was on with Rodney Dangerfield. It's a movie from the 80's. He is a sales man and has a store for Big and Fat people is the name. I think the humor is great but it might be something you can watch and get some ideas from.

You may find a lot if you look at kids dealing with cartoons and commercials. You could atleast use it for part of your paper. I wrote a paper on what your talking about for my child pysc. class a couple years a go. If you can get to it, try PyscInfo Plus. You can get many articles about what your looking for

It's not a matter of the public being sensitive, it is a matter of being sure you don't run off any buyers. Just today I heard a radio commercial for the Garman GPS. It is one of those map things in a car. The guy on the commercial said that even a person that is VERY right will eventually have to turn left. Well, I just didn't like how that slammed a Republican. I am a Republican and I can spend my money with Tom-Tom now. The only way I would change my mind is if I heard the reverse commercial. However, I doubt that it will happen. So, someone thought they were being cleverly political and they just lost a customer. I had planned to buy one this weekend and I definitely will not buy a Garman now. It's not a matter of laughing at ourselves because I felt that was done with venom. I can spend my money where I want. Advertising will either compel me or it will drive me away. It drove me away in this case.

Slippery slope of a project!!! You are eventually going to fall, or more likely be dragged, head first into the current political rift. It depends on the angle you are taking to this project. There is a very strong movement in this country to push away from individuality. You would think that ALL people would enjoy the right to "be entitled to their own opinion". But a growing number of people in the United States do not think this anymore. This is blatently evident in the election of George W. Bush and continued second term. Good luck, but be prepared for fight on this subject. Sideline searches; FCC guidelines and recent changes Truth in advertisement Christian Coalition and control over advertising.
