Question

As a self-employed person, should a company ask me to fill out a w-4 and i-9?

I am a self employed web designer. A recruiting/contracting company who I am interveiwing with tomorrow wants me to bring 2 forms of ID and fill out a w-4 and I-9. Shouldn't I only be filling out a W-9 as a self-employed subcontractor?

As a self-employed you should only complete a W-9 form and receive a 1099 at the end of the year. I would clarify with them that you are self-employed and will not be an employee of the contracting company.

yes, because they will need to file with the IRS to show where the money went for expenses. they will send you a 1099 and also a copy to the IRS
