I have an invention and I was told that if I draw it out to scale and mail it to myself, don't open,isitleagal
Is an unopened mail to myself of a drawing of a product protect it from being stolen or copied

That does not hold up in court. It used to years ago, but not anymore. That used to work because it was like having it notarized. Do yourself a favor and go to a notary and have it notarized and look into getting an actual patent of the idea.

Don't count on it. How can you prove what's in the envelope without opening it? Better to keep it a total secret or get it patented. Or you can race it into production keeping far ahead of the competition.

if you make a drawing you can copyright it but that won't protect the invention. You need to get a patent on the invention.
