Just do it. PR is talking it up anyway so name your company Print cards and network since you have a captive "crowd" - just send out a mass e-mail or mailing introducing yourself (to potential people) it takes time (like any new venture). Just "by the way" I am doing this I'd love it if you could think of me - hand out a card. Smile and offer "your little sell".

My husbands family business - and sister in law is in PR for food. Took time but successful. Having her around helps the family business too with press release, magazine articles and TV spots.

you have to have a lot of contacts in media. It is not enough that you can write press releases, because you should also know who to contact in the papers, in TV and in radio. One thing that you should also know about PR -- it may involve a lot of strategic thinking. You may have clients who can hire you because they had a problem with the community (maybe some factory that was being pressured by NGOs to be more environmental, or the CEO having a bad reputation in media). You should then know how to handle these things. Do you research on crisis communication, issues management and advocacy. But if you're not ready for that kind of PR, then maybe just stick to the brand-building, image-building PR then just move to the more serious PR when you have already learned the secrets of the trade. The key to having a successful PR company is in your network of contacts though. Once you have these, you will just learn through the campaigns as you move along and play things by ear. If you think you're a creative and intuitive person, then those will be your assets. Best of luck to you!
