Does a debt consolidation program negatively or positively affect my credit?

I have quite a bit of credit card debt, and I want to get out. It would be so much easier to only have to pay one bill a month, so I was thinking of consolitating my debt into one big payment each month. But will this effect my credit? I don't want to have bad credit, right now it's OK because I always make payment on time and I always pay more than the minimum but it just doesn't seem to go away. What should I do?
