Question

How to get a debit card from my credit union?

I have tried to obtain a debit card from my credit union but they have denied me saying that I don't have enough credit. Even though I have had my account for almost a year, never "bounced" a check and always have at least $100.00 in my checking at all times . Should I switch credit unions? What am I doing wrong? Yes, they actually DID have me apply for a debit card, not a credit card. I am well over 18... I am actually 30. I have very little credit due to never getting credit cards or having bills in my name. I have wrote well over 300 checks and never "bounced" a single one and always have at least $100.00 in the checking at all times. But shouldn't my good standing with the credit union be enough?

A bank would be a better bet. That is stupid of the bank not letting you have a debit card. It comes straight from your checking account. Here what I have found out when I was looking for a checking for checking account. Some banks check credit for checking account and debit cards. Some banks check credit for checking account Some banks only check to see if your are on telecheck or checksytems for writing bad checks. Some banks will issue a debit card right away about a week after opening an account, others could take up to 60 days I have found out that some credit unions limit only allow 4 to 6 transaction per month including debit cards. At some credit unions these type of accounts are consider money market accounts. They don't have the basic checking account that allows unlimited transactions. Here what to look for. A bank that will issue a debit card within a week and that does no credit checks. Look for a bank that does not have a pin transaction fee or at least allows you to have a certain amount free pin transactions a month and a bank that allows you to have unlimited transaction a month.

Yes, I would shop around for another bank/credit union. I understand them checking your credit before issuing a debit card, but not denying you based on a lack of credit. As long as that credit is not too bad, you should be able to get one. I'm guessing you're over 18 years old as well. I'd like to note that CUs tend to be more risk adverse, in my experience.

you cannot apply for a debit card...a debit card is connected to your checking account. you applied for a credit card. You were denied because you have no credit. There is a difference between the cards. Your credit union did nothing wrong.
