Question

Life insurance for diabetics?

I'm looking for 400,000 dollars in life insurance for my husband. The problem is that he is diabetic and on insulin. Is there any company that offers diabetic coverage?

Most likely not. If your husband does qualify for one, it will cost lots of money for $400k coverage. But it doesn't hurt to try out all the reputable life insurance companies in your area.

have you checked around? I'm pretty sure that there are several life ins companies that will write with diabetes as long as its been under control for at least 6 months. I would call your homeowner's or auto insurance company. Try State Farm or Nationwide..most people dont realize they sell life ins too

Most insurance companies shy away from anybody with a chronic illness such as diabetes, especially insulin dependent. I myself have been turned down for short term and long term disability policies even though I have not had any complications since being hospitalized 14 years ago when I was diagnosed and put on insulin. Term life policies can be had but the premiums were too high, I was better off putting it into a retirement account. You can get accidental death and dismemberment policies at a good rate though. I have one through my credit union from CUNA.

There are 3 companies that will write an insulin dependent diabetic with standard rates. everyone else will rate him up and it will be very expensive. His acceptance depends on a few things. The most important is his fasting blood sugar level. Next is the age of onset. Finally, his other medical history will also be very important. There are way more than 3 companies that will offer insurance to a diabetic. It just varies on what rate each carrier will give him. Try Prudential or Lincoln Life for 400,000 term. Get a good Agent to help you out in person and not on line. You will need help to get the case placed. The premium will depend on past medical history mostly, but height, weight, severity of the diabetes, past hospital trips and of course his age all play a factor. I have placed diabetics on insulin with standard rates, sub-standard rates and I have had some declined. Good Luck

Yes there are. You should get a comparison quote from a few though because cost of coverage will vary wildly. This site will give you a free side by side comparison

Coverage is readily available from a number of companies. Here is information specific to underwriting diabetes for life insurance. www ...

Sure! Most will - the question is, will you be willing to pay the price they want. They'll want to know how well controlled he is, how much insulin he takes, his height/weight, etc, to make a guess at his projected life expectancy, and calculate the rate from that. If he's, for example, a type one, and height/weight proportional (aka, not obese), his life expectancy is about 7 years short of someone NOT a diabetic, so the rates are a bit higher. If he's obese, his life expectancy is considerably shorter, and the rates go up astronomically.

Almost all companies will write someone that is diabetic. If your husband does not manage it well then he may be denied coverage but otherwise should be fine. When you are calling around for quotes let the agent know his medical history. He will most likely be rated at a Table C. All that really means is that he is 3 levels below standard and will have a higher premium. Try different companies and try to find one with relaxed underwriting guidelines.
