First thing to do is to sign onto the voters register for your area. Even if you don't want to vote, this is the first thing any company will check. Then make sure you have some utility bills in your name for proof of address. This can all be organised in about one month. If you have a bank account ask them first if they can help. They might give you a credit card. A friend of mine organised a credit card at Barclays even before he came over and it was ready for him on arrival.

I would try Nationwide, the rates are really good for loans and very easy to arrange

I'm afraid you will have trouble getting a loan. They generally like to see where you have been living and working for the last 3 years and if you cannot provide that they tend to say no. I suppose a quick way is to get a credit card, Barclaycard give cards to anyone.
