Are capital gains on investments abroad taxed in NZ?

Say I acquire New Zealand citizenship and eventually retire there. If I have a tidy sum invested in a variety of US Exchange-Traded Funds which I just hold forever (liquidating little bits here and there to pay living expenses), are the capital gains taxable under NZ law? What if the money were in a US-based hedge fund instead that generates annual short and long-term capital gains?
