Firstly, for insurance purposes, you must inform the police of this. They are very likely to ask you whether or not you have CCTV or such measures installed in/around your safe, and if you don’t they might not do much. However, you can ask employees to take the test, they are not obligated to oblige, and you will not be able to take action if they don’t oblige (i.e. you can’t fire somebody because they refused to take the test). Dealing with theft is very difficult. If you haven’t CCTV cameras, I suggest you install one and employ an outside security company to handle the tapes so no one on the inside can tamper with them. Also, consider handling large amounts of money yourself. If you want to play hardball with your employees, take them in for individual talks and explain that all those who worked that day and/or everyone with access to the safe might be deducted wages for the loss of property. you can ask staff to take a test but you are powerless if they refuse. I had a similar problem to this. I suspected one staff member. I told him that I knew it was him, had back the money and go and dont come back, if you refuse I will hand this over to the police. If you cannot idenify one prime suspect then bring in the police.

You can ask them but you cant force them. I would call the police in. They would then interview each one individually. How many of your staff have keys. What reasons would they go into the safe and if they do is it open for a long period. Could somebody have come in seen it open and taken the opportunity?

contact the police. £6000 is a serious amount. find out who had access to the safe. do you allow any one to use the safe? if so tighten your security. if not do you have a list of key holders. they would be my first targets. when contacting the police have a list of people who were working and a list of people who might of had the keys. also is it cash that's missing, look it to card fraud, some one might be trying to pull the wool over your eyes. good luck and tighten your security.

If you treat all your staff with suspicion, the damage to morale will cost you more than £6k in the long run. It is clearly a matter for the police - make it clear to everyone that the police are involved both because of the serious nature of the incident, and also to ensure that staff members are treated impartially.

You can ask them but they do not have to comply. Surely you have already called the police and informed the insurance company? The police are the best ones to handle the case. If you start accusing memebers of your staff then you will lose the respect and trust of members of staff and might not ever recover that

Lie Detectors are not acceptable as legal Evidence in the U.K and there have been a number of cases where the wrong signals have been given (false readings) due to the person wired up to the machine undergoing different emotions which were wrongly diagnosed. The only course of action you can take is to call in the police who are trained to deal with this situation,in the meantime keep everyone away from the safe and the room where it is kept as it is a Crime Scene. You cannot force your staff to take the test,and if anyone refuses it does not mean they are guilty,they are just exercising their rights. Good luck.

You really need to get the police involved in this, if you don't and you rely only on a test which is 96% accurate, then there is room for denial. The police will take this the one step further that you can't because of your emotion. YOU have been stolen from and you are feeling not only angry that someone you trusted has done this to you, but hurt too. The police won't have any emotion and they will ask the right questions that will trip the guilty one up. I wish you the very best of luck in finding the slime-ball that has done this to you. x
