The Internet's governing body, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), requires that all domain owners associate their domains with current personal (registrant or organization), administrative, technical, and billing contact information. Your domain contact information is legally required to permit quick resolution of technical issues related to your domain and to ensure that trademark and other laws can be enforced. All domain name registrars are required to maintain a database of this information, called WHOIS. Unfortunately, the WHOIS database is public and accessible by anyone, including spammers, identity thieves, and other scam artists.

When you purchase Private Domain Registration for the domain you registered through Yahoo!, our domain name registration partner, Melbourne IT, begins the process of making your personal domain contact information private, replacing your addresses and phone numbers in the public WHOIS database with Melbourne IT's contact information. When the activation process is complete, your own contact information will remain associated with your domain in Yahoo!/Melbourne IT's database but will not be made available in the public WHOIS.

Yahoo! Private Domain Registration is available with all new Yahoo! domain registrations and certain other domains registered through Yahoo! that have not been transferred to another registrar. Please note that due to restrictions surrounding .us domain names, Private Domain Registration is not available for domain names with the extension .us. You can review your WHOIS information anytime from your Domain Control Panel. To view your WHOIS information, visit your Domain Control Panel and click the "View Your Domain Registration" or "View/Edit Your Domain Registration" link (the link displayed will depend on your domain registration history). On the following "Domain Registration Information" page, you'll be able to review your public WHOIS record by clicking the "WHOIS record" link on this page.
