Step 5:  Plan and organize your web site content.

How to plan your site content
Now that you're ready to begin designing your store, think about how you would like to organize your information. This is a great time to review other successful online sellers to learn from what they're doing right. Take a look at our featured stores for design and content inspiration.

While every business is unique, there are certain essential pieces of content required for a world-class web presence. At a minimum you will need:

  • A compelling homepage that promotes your most popular products, special offers, and new items available on your web site. This page should feature your business logo and should link to your top-level Section pages, where you can merchandise different categories of products.
  • Section pages to give customers an overview of a group of related products, such as backpacks or tents.
  • Item pages, where you provide detailed information about individual items in your catalog. Ideally these pages will feature clear, crisp pictures of each product, to help online customers know what they're purchasing.
  • Contact Us/About Us page where you provide a company overview, contact information, shipping and tax rates, return policies, customer service guarantees, and the like.
  • Privacy policy page.
  • Shopping cart and checkout pages - Yahoo! Merchant Solutions creates these automatically based on a form you complete.
  • Navigation links (either HTML text links or buttons) that appear in a consistent order on every page of your site. These links should give customers access to the top-level pages of your site, such as your homepage, section pages, and contact us page.
It will save time and simplify the site building process if you create an outline of your web site pages and draft your content before you start building pages.
