Tumblr: Taking Obsessions to a New LevelOne of the most frustrating things in life is being the only person you know that has an interest for a certain topic. You have no one to nerd out with as you want to discuss the amazing details and nuances. Frustrating, isn’t it?
For the sake of this discussion, let’s say you’re into the TV show “Community.” You’re the only person you know that likes that show, let alone knows it exists. It can be horribly frustrating not having anyone to talk to about how great last night’s episode was and the plot twist that has you going nuts. But alas, you must fan girl alone.
Here is where Tumblr comes into play. Tumblr is a social media platform that is centered around a blog style where you can post your own media content as well as “reblog” someone else’s content so it appears on your blog.
Make a quick search on Tumblr for “Community” and you will soon realize that there are other people out there that love the show too. It’s a comforting feeling to know that there are these new found friends that will chat with you endlessly about the show. In fact, there are people that have whole blogs dedicated entirely to the show, even blogs about a certain character where they post video clips and photos of them. It’s liberating to have a place to immerse yourself into the depths of your favorite TV show.
This might seem strange to some or some might think it is unnecessary, but let me put it this way: think of this like buying a book on a subject. There are pages and pages based on that topic and only that topic and it is written by one author. That idea is similar to a blog on Tumblr only it is free and you’re able to speak with the author directly. But the beauty of Tumblr is that you can read multiple “books” at once and share your findings with your followers instantly by reblogging. You are also not limited to that one “book.” One can follow many blogs one various topics, funneling the new posts onto your dashboard (what a newsfeed is on Facebook). This then takes the hassle out of having to check multiple websites a day for new information and posts and makes it a one-stop-shop for all your likes.
But because all of this information can be found in one place, it can make you even more fascinated and intrigued by the topic, even obsessed if you will. Did you know that your favorite actor on your favorite TV show is also a musician? Did you know he or she has released 5 albums? Did you know they Instagram pictures of their dog multiple times a day? Before you know it you now know every detail that you can about every actor on that TV show and can name all of their all siblings name. (Okay, that’s a bit extreme, but you get my point.)
Tumblr is a great place to fulfill your passion and desire for knowledge on something you love as well as connect with others to share in your passions. Nothing feels as great as discussing the hidden meanings to your favorite book or your excitement for your favorite band’s new album. Can something you like quickly become an obsession?
Is that a bad thing?
Not at all.
Everyone has that one subject they are versed on but Tumblr allows you to share with others who are just as passionate as you. So if you have a chance, hop on over to Tumblr and sign up and let me know what you think. If you already have a Tubmlr, let me know your thoughts on the site.
