A little over 10 years ago a kid fresh out of university took a seat at his desk.
Unknown at the time, he was about to embark on a journey that would shape the next stage of his life.
He was scared. He was nervous. He had a number of doubts over what he was about to do.
He was just moments away from sending his very first email marketing campaign and his mind was racing.
What if there is a typo? What if the images are broken? What if nobody opens the email and I look foolish to my boss?
After checking and rechecking his email, he finally summed up the courage and hit the Send button.
How do I know all this? Well that kid was me.
And whilst this story might seem a little dramatic, it describes a very real issue that almost every email marketer faces at some point.
Whether you’re a novice or an expert, it’s perfectly normal to feel some level of anxiety towards sending an email to your customers.
The risks are quite high after all.
Get it right and you can achieve great things like website traffic, new leads and sales. But get it wrong and it can mean unsubscribers, complaints, and damage to your brand.
So yes, send anxiety is normal but there is something you can do about it.
Cure send anxiety once and for all
Luckily there is a cure for send anxiety. I call it ‘the pre-send ritual’ and it’s all about having a system that you follow each and every time you send an email marketing campaign.
Because just like a footballer has their pre-game ritual, an email marketer needs to have their pre-send ritual.
It’s an excellent way to ensure you’ve dotted the i’s and crossed the t’s and done all you possibly can to ensure your email marketing message is going to succeed.
Not all rituals are going to be the same and you’ll need to come up with one that you feel comfortable with given your own circumstances.
To help you get started though, here’s the one I use whenever I send an email marketing message to our customers.
It has served me well over the years and helped keep me sane. It has also helped ensure the hundreds of marketing emails I have sent are error free.
My pre-send ritual
