The results in Oculus are predictably spooky — enough so to scare some of its acting stiff. You'd think murder would be enough to turn a musical performance into something a bit more dramatic, but that's not quite the case in Stage Fright. Amazon has managed to snatch another minor victory in its back-and-forth battle over streaming rights with Netflix. The company has signed a licensing agreement with BBC America that will make Amazon Prime Instant Video the exclusive "online-only subscription home" for Orphan Black. The show's first season is now available, with the sci-fi series due to return for new episodes on April 19th. Orphan Black follows the story of Sarah Manning, an orphan who discovers she is a human clone "after taking on the identity of a dead woman who looks just like her." Lead actress Tatiana Maslany has received critical praise for her role in the show, including a Golden Globe nomination. The deal between BBC America and Amazon includes season one and all subsequent seasons, so it looks like this is one you'll never be seeing on Netflix. Sony's Alpha 7 cameras shook up the photography world by offering full-frame shooting in a small body, but they also have their fair share of quirks, such as slow startup times and subpar JPEG images. Some of those problems may vanish very soon, though, as Sony plans to roll out big firmware updates for both the Alpha 7 and 7R on March 19th. The two cameras should start faster, and they'll also get a nebulous "image quality improvement" -- hopefully, that means better JPEG output. John Chen has a difficult road ahead of him, something he has acknowledged repeatedly since taking on the role of CEO at BlackBerry. In his latest interview with The New York Times, he went so far as to admit that phones might not be a major part of BlackBerry’s future, depending on where the software takes the company. If BlackBerry can find a profitable way to produce new phones, it will, but otherwise the company plans to focus on embedding its software into other products, forming partnerships and even building new devices altogether. “Apple has to sell 58 million phones to get, I’d guess, a 10 to 12 percent margin,” said Mr. Chen. “If you’re not first or second in phone More »BlackBerry CEO tells us what he and Steve Jobs have in common

Apple may have beaten Google to market with its in-car smartphone system, CarPlay, which launched this week at the Geneva Motor Show. That's because, according to Fast Company, Apple is taking development slowly and is only allowing new apps on to the platform gradually. Safety and minimal driver distraction are paramount to the company and as a result, so far the only applications outside of Apple's own core apps that are available for CarPlay are music streaming or internet radio apps. In fact, Apple has been so selective that those apps can be counted on one hand -- Spotify, Beats Radio, iHeartRadio and Stitcher. More »Apple in no hurry to bring more apps to the dashboard
The elevator at Castle Black rumbled beneath my feet. It's a museum-style tour that offers a glimpse at the props, costumes, and models used in the making of the show, and it featured the soft launch of an Oculus Rift-powered experience that takes viewers inside George R.R. Martin's mythical land of Westeros. An expanded version of the showcase is here at South By Southwest, and the unmistakeable highlight is the fully-realized version of the Oculus experience. Now incorporating 4D elements such as wind blasts and vibration, it's a reminder that while the Oculus Rift can be arresting unto itself, it's when designers and developers begin toying with the rest of our senses that real magic can happen. Or so say the results of research undertaken by the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Edinburgh. The object of the game is to place clay geometric shapes (Brickets) on a box in certain numbers or combinations in order to activate a light and play music. For example, following game demonstrations, the preschoolers quickly figured out that combinations of shapes placed on the box would trigger the music, while the students persisted in trying to figure out which individual geometric shapes made the music play. The newest additions to Moto Maker are basketball inspired: in time for March Madness, Motorola has released nine new back colors and three new accent colors for the Moto X that match popular college basketball teams. But still, considering Motorola's goal of offering total phone customization, engraved logos would've been a more interesting option than a clear case. Motorola has been giving discounts on the Moto X in any way it can think of: recently the company slashed the phone's price to just $299 off-contract. It has also pegged new colors to NFL teams in the past, and Motorola is clearly trying to appeal to the huge college basketball fan base — both current students and graduates — before the most heated games begin.
