Of all of the dramas currently unfolding in the tech world right now, Microsoft’s is undoubtedly among the most intriguing. Years ago, just before Windows Phone was first released, industry watchers warned that unless Microsoft could make serious strides in the smartphone market, it would undoubtedly be doomed. Then the iPad and Android tablets began eating into PC shipments and analysts warned that unless Microsoft launched an immediate and aggressive attack on the tablet market, it would be steamrolled by Apple and Google. And yet despite all that, Microsoft is still thriving, having More »Former Apple exec: Has Microsoft gone nuts?
Just six weeks after its launch, the second coming of online drug market Silk Road has run afoul of the law. TechCrunch is reporting that two of the site's moderators have been arrested — one in Ireland and one in Virginia — and Forbes has confirmed with the FBI that multiple arrests have been made. In one as yet unverified report, the arresting officer was special agent Christopher Tarbell, the same man who led the charge on the initial Silk Road busts as well as earlier LulzSec arrests. The Virginia arrest is believed to have targeted Andrew Michael Jones, who went by the name "Inigo" on the site. More »Multiple moderators arrested in international Silk Road 2.0 busts

Google wants to keep Chrome speedy, easy to use, and stable, and the company is focusing on reigning in extensions to do so. The company is putting new restrictions in place mandating that all extensions "must have a single purpose that is narrow and easy-to-understand," according to a blog post announcing the news by engineering director Erik Kay. The new requirement goes into effect today for new extensions submitted to the Chrome Web Store, and those already in the store will have until June of next year to comply. The new policy means major changes are in store for some extensions, but Kay notes that Chrome was originally designed to only support limited extensions by design. A Japanese researcher on Friday unveiled an invention that instantly and wirelessly transmits force between two devices, in a development that could allow physical therapists to treat patients remotely. Kouhei Ohnishi said his "force transceiver" permits two-way communication of the amount of pressure being applied and the resistance it is encountering in real time. "For physical therapy, the feeling and movement of therapists must be transferred without any delay," Ohnishi told reports. The technology should help reduce the burden on medical care providers while increasing convenience for patients, said Ohnishi, a system design engineering professor at Keio University. From deliveries to warfare, there are many uses for drones, but this might be the most cheerful yet. The Mistletoe Drone is exactly what it sounds like — a flying drone decked out with mistletoe, enticing city dwellers to kiss by soaring over their heads. Creators George Zisiadis and Mustafa Khan recently set the drone loose in San Francisco's Union Square, and you can watch the heart warming results below. "Drones have been causing all sorts of paranoia lately," Zisiadis told The Bold Italic, "and I wanted to reframe them from being something scary and ominous to being fun and human."
