List a couple of holidays that are important to retailers and marketers. Go ahead, I’ll wait…
Ready? Ok. I bet this week’s paycheck that you all included the winter holiday season on your list. I’m talking about Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza, Solstice- it doesn’t matter exactly which one you celebrate in December- the last month of the year and the month leading up to are key to a retailers’ YOY success. You may have also listed Black Friday/Cyber Monday/Thanksgiving weekend on your list- that is also a very crucial shopping weekend. Depending on your industry, there may be other holidays on your list, for example, I imagine if you sell candy Halloween, Mother’s Day, and Valentine’s Day are going to round out your Top 5.
A Veteran's saluteTake a look at your list. How many of you included Veterans Day? No? How about Memorial Day and Fourth of July? I’ve got 32 million reasons you should consider adding patriotic holidays to your marketing calendar- the 32M veterans, reservists, actively serving members of the Armed Forces, and their immediate family members who make up the military community.
The military community is everything you could want in a target demographic, and they are extremely loyal to businesses that recognize and honor military service. Last time we surveyed military folks, 85% of them told us they’re more likely to shop with companies on days when they offer special military discounts like military appreciation days, Memorial Day, and yep, Veterans Day. 54% reported that they’re more likely to shop at these businesses year round, not just on the days that they give special military offers, because they like to support businesses that support our troops.
I don’t want to sound like I’m giving you a sales pitch, but the truth is that businesses that partner with SheerID to keep their military discounts exclusive like Costco, PGA Tour, Fathead, Shooters Pro Shop, and Traeger Grills frequently see a spike in military discount usage around military appreciation days and military holidays. Over 18.5 million people read the news about SheerID clients who launched new military discounts last Memorial Day and Fourth of July. Military holidays are a great way to give your Q2, Q3, and Q4 numbers a little boost, reach new customers, and increase incremental revenue, and you can test an exclusive active duty discount for free. We won’t even charge you for the verifications; we just want our service members to enjoy more discounts.
If the hard sell didn’t convince you that a Veterans Day discount is worth trying, let’s see if a few words direct from the military community can melt your Grinch-like heart. These gems were also collected during our most recent military survey. There you go.
“Far too few [military discounts] are offered. They are very appreciated when and where offered.”
“They are great. It shows appreciation for the work we’ve done for our country.”
“Discounts are a great way to say ‘thank you’; I am more likely to patronize businesses that offer discounts because of their ‘troop-friendly’ practices.”
“I would shop at stores who offer discounts to vets even before I was one. I appreciate a company that does their part. Big Five Shoes does a good job with vet discounts.”
“I like the discounts. Just wish business would advertise them more at the door or checkout counter. Do I get a discount and how much is it? Where?”
There are 5 great reasons to consider offering a military discount this Veterans Day. If you’d like to take advertise your discount in-store, on your home page or at the checkout counter, or send out a press release, or post your discount on Facebook, you totally can because we can make sure that only qualified military personnel can redeem it. And with our hosted solutions, we can have you up and running before Veterans Day. Your IT department will love us.
Let’s make this Veteran’s Day truly memorable and see if we can get military holidays on your Top 10 retail holidays list for 2014. They might not ever top Cyber Monday, but we’re pretty sure we’ve got St. Patrick’s Day, Groundhog’s Day, and National Talk-Like-a-Pirate Day beat.
