In a word... footwork. Nothing is more productive than personally visiting every prospective venue in person to pitch your business proposal. Be prepared to answer any questions you might be asked. Always remember that the bottom line for the client is how much business you can bring to their establishment. It's usually best to go during the day when they are not too busy and you have a chance to talk to someone in charge of entertainment.

Have competitions and offer prizes. And not just for the "best" singer, prizes for funniest outfit, worst singer, oldest singer etc. Print up flyers and distribute them to local businesses offering special "deals" for group bookings (ie getting a group of staff from a company to all come along).
