Can you wrap a item in brown paper and ship it using USPS without a box?

I have an irregular shaped item. I have seen things shipped that looked wraped in paper and clear plastic being shipped. What form of shipping is this?

I do not advise shipping without a box to protect the item.Things are packed in a trailer or put on a pallet and shipped by plane. Your item can be more easily damaged if not in a box.
