I was asked to submit a cover letter for a job, what is that? please help!?

I am applying for a job with my local newspaper who is offering the spot for students to report on issues at our school. i would love to get the job, but it says "if you are interested, email a cover letter and writing sample..." what is a cover letter? is that like a resume? i am really confused as what to do. thank you so much!!

A cover letter in this case would be an addition to your resume. Like Dear whoever, I hope you give serious consideration to my resume. I would love to work with your company and I think I would be good at it because etc. etc.

You're asking for a job involving writing so they want to see how good you are at it. What you say won't count as much as how well you say it.
