When I want to add a link, I go to the page I want linked, copy the link from the url bar at the top of the browser page (select all of it and use control+c), then paste it in (use control+v; in the source area, normally).

After you have made a moderate number of answers (maybe 25 I don't recall) when you just paste in a complete URL it creates a live link.
A few banned sites will result in a 999 error or Answers unavailable sort of error.
