I don't believe there is any industry standard number of unique visitors that determines where a company will place web ads.
Certainly they would want tens of thousands of uniques per month or more. They might also want to know about visitor engagement, time on site, bounce rate, etc. And they might want to know the history, that is for how long this amount of traffic has been sustained.

To make it worthwhile for them to pay you they may well impose a limit, there is no min traffic requirement from, the popular Google Adsense, although they will not pay you until you reach the $100 min earnings, typically requiring tens of thousands of visitors.
Some of the more elite ad networks require sites to have 500,000 visitors a month.
A search for "Adsense alternatives" will turn up ad networks paying after $10 earnings.
Assume a site may earn roughly 2 cents per visitor, advertisements may not be good for a new site's ranking, it might make sense to not bother until getting a meaningful amount of visitors, like 50-100 a day.
I think it's not compulsory, it depends upon your content how inspiry it is.
