Amazon is one of the oldest affiliate programs around. Their online presence and their affiliate programs have made them THE biggest bookseller in the world and they are the reason that a lot of major book chains like B. Dalton and Waldenbooks went out of business, so yes they are a legit company with a serious affiliate program.
You do not have to pay to become an affiliate for them. Once you join, you're in for life, but promoting their stuff is simply a matter of adding code to your website. So if you no longer want to promote Amazon products, just remove the code from your site.
Although thousands of people are Amazon affiliates, and make some extra money, the problem is that amazon has one of the lowest commission percentages in the affiliate marketing industry. I believe it's like around 15-30%.
My suggestion would be to go to clickbank.com and start promoting their products. For the same amount of work, you get commissions between 50-75% per sale.

Although the 4% to 8% commission (depending on the number of sales you secure) is relatively low, Amazon's sales system is deadly efficient and can earn you more than a lesser site's 20% commissions. Some will advise you to only promote high end products, particularly of using paid advertising.
A lot of people have amazon affiliate sites, there are libraries of templates and "Made for you" product review videos to make setting up a site easier. Amazon has a data feed that can make it easy to automatically create hundreds of product pages on your site, there are several Wordpress plugins that do this job.
No sign up fees or cancellation problems.
Amazon does not allow affiliate from some U.S. states that have setup a legal loophole wherein someone operating in their state is considered an Amazon facility entitling the state to charge Amazon sales taxes.

Amazon program are very seriously program and YES you can earn good money if you know what you are doing. Making money on the internet is not get rich quick schemes. It will pass some time till you get your first earnings and it’s not for everyone.
Amazon affiliate program is free to join and you can quit whenever you want.
If you are making a website doesn’t mean you will make money on Amazon. Depend what type of website you make. What type of marketing methods you will use (SEO, PPC...)
If you are asking about Amazon it means you are a beginner and you need to learn a lot on marketing. First thing you should learn is to read all and I really mean it. (TOS, privacy policy...)
