I wold like to develop an idea of mine. Should I use one of those Invention dot com businesses?

I have an idea that I would like to develop. Should I try to get a patent, prototype, etc by myself? I have no experience in this area, but have a feeling those companies don't have my best interests in mind. This is just me starting my due diligence. Looking for some guidance or advices.
