Question
Where is the best place to live in Colorado?
Where is the best place and why? We are looking to relocate from Montana, and we are a professional family of four. What are the best points about the city/community you have chosen?
Best and MOST HELPFUL answer gets the points of course...
website links would be great too
Best Answer
I moved to Durango, Colorado from Los Angeles 15 months ago. Here are the pros:
1. Education: I have a 15 year old that had attended private school from 1st-8th grade. I was really nervous about sending him to public school (having come from the nightmare that is the LA school system). He absolutely loves it! The school system is excellent with lots of electives, honor classes, etc... I also have a 12 year old that was adopted from Russia 2 years ago and is behind in school. The middle school goes above and beyond in getting him personalized, special attention and tutoring to get him caught up. I couldn't be happier with the Durango school system.
2. Recreation: If you like to be outside, you need to be here! In the winter, we have excellent skiing/boarding at the local resort, as well as hundreds of miles of snowmobile and backcountry skiing trails. There are 2 other resorts within a 2 hour drive, one of which receives the most snow in Colorado! (Wolf Creek). In the warmer months, we have hiking, camping, fishing, hunting, ATVing, jeeping, rafting, just about anything you could imagine. Not to mention the mountain biking here is world renowned.
3. Scenery: Fabulous. Awesome. Unbelievable. A gorgeous river runs right through town (the Animas). We're surrounded by gorgeous mountains. Deer roam through town. Very idyllic.
4. Climate: Here, Durango really "shines", and I mean that literally! We have over 300 days of sun. Four distinct seasons. Not to hot in the summer, and not unbearably cold in the winter. Here are our averages:

5. Small town feel: We have a beautiful historic downtown shopping area, people are friendly, everyone has a dog and brings it along with them everywhere they go! It's just a great place to raise a family, which is why after much research we moved here.
6. Economy: It's growing. This booming little tourist town is growing quickly. There is a lot of opportunity here if you know where to look.
There are probably a lot more pros I could list, but that should give you a good idea!
CONS
1. Depending on your field, you may have a difficult time finding a job. There is a new hospital here, and there is quite a bit of opportunity over there from what I understand.
2. If you are a "I have to have everything at my fingertips." type of person, you may be in for a surprise. This is a small town, and there are some items that you just can't get here and you have to drive to Farmington, NM (about an hour away). That is slowly changing though as the town is growing rapidly.
3. The real estate is a little pricey. Coming from Los Angeles, we thought everything here was a steal!! But coming from Montana, you might find the real estate a little high. Here's a snapshot:

Anyway, I hope that helps. I run a local website called AccessDurango.com. You may want to check there for a feel of the local community.

I would check into Aurora, CO. It's not far from Denver but has a nice suburb feel to it. The homes are ranging in the low 200's and you're not far from the ski resorts either.
by Ern - 4 years agoWe summer near Pagosa Springs...very scenic and a very fun place where the outdoors is concerned, but not a megalopolis.
Skiing is close by and so are lakes and streams for summer boating fishing, Also a nice hot spring in town to soak away the aches and pains of the day...and no, I don't work for their Chamber of Commerce. Good luck in your hunt.
