3 Ways SMBs Are Using Social Media and New Technologies to Grow Their BusinessWhile attending the BIA/Kelsey Conference recently, we saw some fantastic presentations for sharpening marketing strategy and doing better business. Another great source of information was Local Commerce Monitor, BIA/Kelsey’s ongoing tracking survey of the latest trends for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs). Some of the research shared around social media and other new technologies were very interesting so we thought we’d share them here.
72% of SMBs Use Social Media to Promote Their Business
We knew social media was on the rise—in fact, we just released a white paper about social media for businesses looking to use it as a lead gen tool—but 72% is really encouraging when you think of the growing willingness of businesses to experiment with new technologies. Social media might just have opened a new frontier for other avenues of innovation: if businesses will try something like Twitter, they might be willing to try other tools that emerge as time goes by.
40% of SMBs Accept POS Payments with Mobile Credit Card Readers Attached to a Smartphone or Tablet
We found this to be a very fascinating statistic. If brick and mortar businesses are willing to stray from the traditional idea of a cash register, this might be the start of an interesting shift in the way businesses imagine business. If a smartphone can take the place of a cash register, what else can it replace?
32% of SMBs Use Some Form of Mobile Advertising to Promote Their Businesses
This is huge. Many smaller businesses go the traditional route when it comes to advertising: print, billboard, etc. But as online and mobile advertising becomes more prevalent, more and more businesses realize the importance of expanding into that frontier. Things like call tracking for Google SEO and PPC and new mobile marketing strategies to target smartphone users make the process of advertising online less intimidating, so it makes sense that SMBs are taking advantage of these tools and using them in brand new ways.
These are just some of the ways that SMBs are growing up. New technologies are emerging all the time, and so is the willingness of businesses to experiment with them. We would wager that things are going to get more and more interesting as time goes by: this is just the beginning of SMB innovation, and we can’t wait to see what’s next.
